Slow Down 02:53
SLOW DOWN (c) Myla Smith (ASCAP) Make the coffee, make the bed Make a plan to get ahead and go go go, go go go Make a face, make a fist Make another laundry list oh-oh-oh, oh Every day is more confusing It's a game and I am losing The devil on my shoulder says "Don't slow down You're falling behind You're already too old to get what you want out of life Don't slow down" Go to school so you can learn How much money you should earn Oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh You'll be the sum of your success Oversleep, miss the test No no no, no! The winners with their eyes accusing Let me know that I am losing The devil on my shoulder says "Don't slow down You're falling behind You're already too old to get what you want out of life Don't slow down" Smile big, dress the part But the eyes betray the heart Hollow, hollow Fill it up full of stuff, has it ever been enough No, no, no, no! The busyness that I'm excusing Is a drug that I'm abusing But I don't have to let it rule me The devil lies, he won't fool me When he comes in close and says "Don't slow down You're falling behind You're already too old to get what you want out of life You're falling behind You're already too old to get what you want out of life You're falling behind You're already too old to get what you want out of life Don't slow down"

Bad Boys 03:27
BAD BOYS (c) Myla Smith (ASCAP) Zips up his leather jacket Puts out his cigarette He's all, 'hey, baby, what's your name, I don't think we've met' Leans in a little closer So he can whisper in my ear 'this place is getting kind of tired, whatcha say we get outta here?' All the bad boys Are looking for a good time Catch 'em looking my way Baby, I'm not that kind They don't know how to have fun Without losing their minds They don't know how to have a good time, good time, good time I'd spot 'em back in high school Smoking in the parking lot All experts in indulgence and not getting caught It felt cool to flirt with danger Til they flirt with all your friends Break their phone because they're wasted And never call again All the bad boys Are looking for a good time Catch 'em looking my way Baby, I'm not that kind They don't know how to have fun Without losing their minds They don't know how to have a good time, good time, good time When they get older they get haircuts Start to look like men They get bored and then get reckless And that's where you come in All the bad boys Are looking for a good time Catch 'em looking my way Baby, I'm not that kind I know how to have fun Without losing my minds] Yeah, I know how to have a good time, good time, good time

HELP ME! (c) Myla Smith (ASCAP) Help me! I got a hole inside My heart is dry I keep trying to fill it up Lately I think I might know why My heart is dry Nothing's ever been enough If I'm honest with myself Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you Help me Feel something new I'm dying to But nothing penetrates my heart No one knows me the way you do I'm dying to! But I don't know where to start If I'm honest with myself Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you Oh, What I really want is you

Follow 03:22
HELP ME! (c) Myla Smith (ASCAP) I'm terrified You tell me to come inside Oh, I gotta follow You crack the door I wish you would show me more But, oh, I gotta follow After you Wherever you go I'm going too Follow after you Wherever you go I gotta follow you The narrow stairs Are shaky and need repairs Oh, I gotta follow This enclosed space Is making my heart race But, oh, I gotta follow After you Wherever you go I'm going too Follow after you Wherever you go I gotta follow you The wardrobe's full Long coats made of fur and wool Oh, I gotta follow You pull me in We're not coming back again Oh, I got to Follow after you Wherever you go I'm going too Follow after you Wherever you go I'm going too Follow after you Wherever you go I'm going too Follow after you Wherever you go I gotta follow you I gotta follow you

about

There are a lot of contradictory things about songwriter Myla Smith. Not the least of which is Drugs, the title of her forthcoming EP, which is less about popping pills and more about the ways we all attempt to fill the holes in our hearts with things that are less than real.

For Drugs, Myla worked again with James Joseph, who engineered and produced her last project, 2010’s double EP White/Gold. She first approached Joseph in late 2011, but his plate was full until May. The wait turned out to be a blessing – she took out her pen and guitar and started writing, and when they were finally ready to press record she had over 30 songs to choose from to ultimately conceive of a six-song EP.

The songs that emerged fit together in a way Myla may not have imagined when she first began writing.

“When you’re picking songs for a record, you always want there to be a common thread that ties them all together,” Myla says. “When I made White/Gold, I was getting married and also seeing some of my close friends get divorced, so that record deals heavily in the dual nature of relationships, the bright side and the dark side. Drugs was different. Each song is its own experience but together they tell a story from start to finish.”

She says it wasn’t until she had chosen the songs and laid them side-by-side that she realized just what she had on her hands.

“I had been thinking and writing a lot about different vices – why we have them, and more specifically, what happens to us when they stop working, because eventually they all do,” Myla says. “Drugs is a picture of people slowly reaching the end of their rope, the end of themselves, and letting go of their vices, their artificial pain relievers, their ‘drugs,’ in order to take hold of that incredibly scary and real thing called hope.”

Sonically, Myla says, Drugs is also a bit of a departure from her previous work. “To me, every song feels wide-screen cinematic,” she says. “I love using lyrical imagery to tell stories, and when those images get paired with sonic textures and instrumental choices that perfectly capture the mood you’re trying to create, its feels like a kaleidoscope coming into focus. That’s how I feel when I listen to the record front-to-back.”

Myla worked with a talented group of artists in recording Drugs, including her husband Richard Thomas, who played bass and cello on the record. The rest of the roster includes Timmy Jones on drums (Remedy Drive), Mark Trussell on guitar (Dave Barnes) and Jonathan Chu on violin (Skillet). Drugs was mastered by GRAMMY® winning engineer Brad Blackwood (Alison Krauss, Sara Bareilles, Maroon5).
