about
It has often been said that worshippers may forget the sermon that was preached, but they will remember the songs. The truth in such a statement is borne out of the reality that hymnody has an innate ability to move the mind, body, and soul in ways like none other. It has the power to deeply root into our being the words, thoughts, experiences, ambitions, trials, joys, fears, and hopes associated with the Christian life. It is truly a means of grace through which believers are able to confess and profess their faith in a language that all generations are able to comprehend—music. In his preface to the Genevan Psalter, John Calvin wrote that worship music acts “like spurs to incite us to pray and praise God, and to meditate upon His works in order to love, fear, honor, and glorify Him.” Hymnody is a way for Christians to articulate the Gospel to the lost in both the present and future, connect with others believers across the ages, and converse with the God of eternity.
With this in mind, The Outliers, brother-sister duo Myla and Luke Smith, began recording Amid the Flood in the summer of 2008 in order to set the Gospel-rich texts of their forebears to new music and continue the Kingdom work they established with their hymnody. Amid the Flood is a worship album for the glory of God and the benefit of the Church. Its purpose is to re-frame the music of the Gospel, the hope of salvation through Christ alone, so that the wounds of the broken hearted may be healed and that those amid the flood may look to their Helper for rescue.
All proceeds from album sales will be donated to Lagniappe Presbyterian Church (Bay St. Louis, MS), Christ Presbyterian Church(Oakland, TN), and Palmer Home for Children (Columbus, MS). Please visit their websites to find out more about these worthy charities.
